From CNN Senior White House Correspondent Ed Henry
"Reports that President Obama has made a decision about Afghanistan are
absolutely false," Jones, who generally keeps a low public profile,
said in a prepared statement Monday night. "He has not received final
options for his consideration, he has not reviewed those options with
his national security team, and he has not made any decisions about
resources. Any reports to the contrary are completely untrue and come
from uninformed sources."

NORTH KOREAN AND SOUTH KOREAN SHIPS CLASHED AT SEA

A South Korean warship has exchanged fire with a North Korean naval vessel, reports from both countries say.
Officials
in Seoul say the South Korean vessel opened fire when the Northern ship
crossed a disputed sea border. The North Korean vessel then fired back.
North Korea insists its ship did not cross the border, and has demanded an apology, according to news agency KCNA.
The White House warned North Korea against any further action that could be seen as an "escalation".

Comedy Twitter feed lands TV deal
The feed began in August after Halpern moved back in with his parents
|
A Twitter feed featuring pearls of wisdom from a 73-year-old father could become a family comedy on US TV.
Justin
Halpern, 29, has become an internet star with more than 700,000
followers since he began posting his father's often profane words of
wisdom.
The comments include: "The baby will talk when he
talks, relax. It ain't like he knows the cure for cancer and he just
ain't spitting it out."
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Halpern will co-write the CBS project.
The
trade paper also reports that Halpern will be a co-executive producer
and that the creators of Will and Grace, David Kohan and Max Mutchnick,
are on board to develop the comedy.
It will then become a pilot before executives decide whether to turn it into a series.
Halpern already has a book deal with Harper Collins - he will co-write the TV project and will also be a co-executive producer.
Halpern
moved back in with his parents in San Diego in August and began the
Twitter feed based on daily conversations with his dad soon after.
Here are some of Mr Halpern Snr's words of wisdom:
• "Oh please, you practically invented lazy. People should have to call you and ask for the rights to lazy before they use it."
•
"Just pay the parking ticket. Don't be so outraged. You're not a
freedom fighter in the civil rights movement. You double parked."
•
"Don't touch the bacon, it's not done yet. You let me handle the bacon,
and I'll let you handle... whatever it is you do. I guess nothing."
•
"Your mother made a batch of meatballs last night. Some are for you,
some are for me, but more are for me. Remember that. More. Me."
•
"Why would I want to check a voicemail on my cell phone? People want to
talk to me, call again. If I want to talk to you, I'll answer."
•
"I turn the kitchen faucet on and the shower burns you, yes, I get
it... No, I'm not gonna stop, I'm just saying yes, I get that concept.
US man guilty of newsreader death
Anne Pressly was attacked at her home in Arkansas
|
A US man has been found guilty of the
murder of a television newsreader he attacked at her home in Little
Rock, Arkansas in 2008.
Curtis Lavelle Vance, 29, could now face the death penalty for killing 26-year-old Anne Pressly.
Doctors
said Ms Pressly, a presenter on the KATV station, was brutally beaten
around the head and face, suffering massive swelling of the brain.
Vance was also found guilty on charges of rape and burglary.
Ms
Pressly was found by her mother who had gone round to her house on 20
October after she failed to answer her regular morning wake-up call.
She died five days later having never regained consciousness.
Shortly before the attack, the presenter had had a small role in W, the Oliver Stone film about President George W Bush, as a conservative commentator.
ALSO, THIS COOL BOOK CAME OUT!
I'll admit it, when I heard there was a "Dark X-Men
"
mini-series, I groaned. Another mini-series with the word "dark" in the
title? Really? On the other hand, it was reuniting the "Captain Britain
and MI13" creative team of Paul Cornell and Leonard Kirk, so for that
alone it was worth taking a gander at. As it turns out? This reminds me
a lot of the first year's worth of "Thunderbolts" by Kurt Busiek and
Mark Bagley, and I loved those comics.
The premise is a solid enough one; after losing half of his own
X-Men team during the events of "Utopia," Norman Osborn's remaining
roster (Mystique, Mimic, Omega, and Dark Beast) continue to work for
him even as they're all falling apart. Cornell wisely takes a different
tactic with each of the characters; Mimic and Dark Beast are at
opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of "hero"
versus "villain," while Omega and Mystique occupy various shades of
gray in-between the two. So while Mystique genuinely worries about
Mimic's state of mind, at the same time she's also not against
emotionally putting the screws towards the X-Men. Or even as Omega
keeps talking about trying to make up for the bad things he's done in
the past, his addiction to the energies from other mutants comes across
more than a little worrisome.
It's actually fun watching these misfits of the mutant universe
interact with one another. Cornell gives them a good rapport, one that
is certainly aided by Kirk's slick pencils. You can see the worry on
Mimic's face while in Moonstone's office, or when he starts catching a
glimpse of his own future and begins to push Mystique away. I don't
know if these characters could carry an ongoing series or not, but I
can't help but think that based on this it would be worth a shot. Of
course, Kirk's clean character designs are paramount to that idea; he's
able to make them have just the right "good and wholesome" outward
appearance that Osborn would demand for his X-Men team, and it's a
perfect contrast to the darkness that resides in the hearts of
characters like Dark Beast and Mystique.
I also have to give Cornell credit for bringing back a semi-obscure
X-Men character here. Not only does the character fit the whole "dregs
of the mutant universe" tone of the book, but there's even a connection
between this character and a member of the team. (One that I'd actually
forgotten until it's alluded to by the character.) It's a nice usage of
past continuity, and it promises to be fun as the book moves forward.
I've been saying lately that I'm burnt out on "Dark" books from Marvel
, but for "Dark X-Men" I'm more than willing to make an exception.
THURSDAY NOVEMBER 12th
I know we are all sick of this Balloon Boy crap, but here you go!
'Guilty plea' in balloon boy case
Falcon Heene's alleged balloon flight triggered a media storm in the US
|
The US parents who triggered a major
alert by claiming their six-year-old son was adrift in a helium balloon
are to admit charges, their lawyer says.
Falcon Heene's
mother is to admit false reporting to authorities and his father will
admit attempting to influence a public servant.
Falcon's disappearance became a media drama but he was later found at home.
Police accused the family of masterminding the 15 October incident as part of a publicity bid.
The
couple, who have three children, will enter their pleas at Larimer
County Court on Friday, a statement from their lawyer says.
Police search
The incident in Colorado led to a media storm.
TV news crews in the US tracked the balloon as it landed
The couple reported that their young son had been carried away by a
helium balloon - whose progress was then tracked by news organisations.
Police carried out an intensive search for the boy after the
balloon landed about 64km (40 miles) north of Denver and was found to
be empty.
But it then transpired that the child was hiding at home and days later the couple were accused of an elaborate hoax.
According
to a statement from lawyer David Lane, Mayumi Heene, 45, will admit a
misdemeanour and her husband Richard, 48, a felony.
Mr Lane
said Mr Heene agreed to "fall on his sword" by admitting the felony
charge to prevent his wife - a Japanese national - being ordered out of
the US.
The stipulated sentences for both are probation, his
statement said, with the possibility of up to 60 days in jail for Mrs
Heene and up to 90 days for Mr Heene.
Larimer County Sheriff
Jim Alderden had earlier suggested that the couple could have faced
charges of conspiracy and contributing to the delinquency of a minor -
which carry jail terms of up to six years.
Greenland ice loss 'accelerating'
|
By Richard Black
Environment correspondent, BBC News website
|
The Ilulissat glacier has retreated by approximately 15km over the past decade
The Greenland ice sheet is losing its
mass faster than in previous years and making an increasing
contribution to sea level rise, a study has confirmed.
Published in the journal Science, it has also given scientists a clearer view of why the sheet is shrinking.
The
team used weather data, satellite readings and models of ice sheet
behaviour to analyse the annual loss of 273 thousand million tonnes of
ice.
Melting of the entire sheet would raise sea levels globally by about 7m (20ft).
For the period 2000-2008, melting Greenland ice raised sea levels by an average of about 0.46mm per year.
 |
If you multiply these numbers up it puts us well beyond the IPCC estimates for 2100
|
Since 2006, that has increased to 0.75mm per year.
"Since
2000, there's clearly been an accelerating loss of mass [from the ice
sheet]," said lead researcher Michiel van den Broeke from Utrecht
University in the Netherlands.
"But we've had three very warm summers, and that's enhanced the melt considerably.
"If this is going to continue, I cannot tell - but we do of course expect the climate to become warmer in the future."
In total, sea levels are rising by about 3mm per year, principally because seawater is expanding as it warms.
Sea change
Changes
to the Greenland sheet and its much larger counterpart in Antarctica
are subjects commanding a lot of interest within the scientific
community because of the potential they have to raise sea levels to an
extent that would flood many of the world's major cities.

Climate change
- A pattern of change affecting global or regional climate as measured
by yardsticks such as average temperature and rainfall, or an
alteration in frequency of extreme weather conditions. This variation
may be caused by both natural processes and human activity.
Global warming is one aspect of climate change.
The 2007 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report projected a sea level rise of 28-43cm during this century.
But
it acknowledged this was almost certainly an underestimate because
understanding of how ice behaves was not good enough to make reliable
projections.
By combining different sources of data in the way
it has, and by quantifying the causes of mass loss, the new study has
taken a big step forwards, according to Roger Barry, director of the
World Data Center for Glaciology at the University of Colorado in
Boulder, US.
"I think it's a very significant paper; the results in it are certainly very significant and new," he said.
"It
does show that the [ice loss] trend has accelerated, and the reported
contribution to sea level rise also shows a significant acceleration -
so if you multiply these numbers up it puts us well beyond the IPCC
estimates for 2100."
Professor Barry was an editor on the section of the IPCC report dealing with the polar regions.
On reflection
An
ice sheet can lose mass because of increased melting on the surface,
because glaciers flow more quickly into the ocean, or because there is
less precipitation in the winter so less bulk is added inland.
The
new research shows that in Greenland, about half the loss comes from
faster flow to the oceans, and the other half from changes on the ice
sheet itself - principally surface melting.
The Grace satellites provide a twin eye on gravity at the Earth's surface
|
Another analysis of satellite data, published in September, showed
that of 111 fast-moving Greenland glaciers studied, 81 were thinning at
twice the rate of the slow-moving ice beside them.
This indicates that the glaciers are accelerating and taking more ice into the surrounding sea.
Melting
on the ice sheet's surface acts as a feedback mechanism, Dr van den
Broeke explained, because the liquid water absorbs more and reflects
less of the incoming solar radiation - resulting in a heating of the
ice.
"Over the last 10 years, it's quite simple; warming over
Greenland has caused the melting to increase, and that's set off this
albedo feedback process," he told BBC News.
"Quite likely the
oceans have also warmed, and it's likely that explains the
[acceleration of] outlet glaciers because they're warmed from below."
Data
provided over just the last few years by the Grace satellite mission -
used in this study - is giving researchers a closer view of regional
variations across the territory.
Grace's twin satellites map
gravity at the Earth's surface in unprecedented detail; and it is now
possible to tease out from the data that most of the mass is being lost
in the southeast, southwest and northwest at low elevations where the
air will generally be warmer than at high altitudes.
Professor
Barry cautioned that the Grace mission, which has produced valuable
data about Antarctica as well as Greenland, has only a further two
years to run, and that no replacement is currently scheduled.

BATMAN 3
It's
been awhile since we had a Batman 3 sighting. In fact, looking back on
things, it appears the only source of information on the film has been
trusty butler Michael Caine. Well, no longer. Now, he is towing the
company line. IGN
reports the actor told British magazine Shortlist, "I don't know if
they are ever going to make another 'Batman.' If they do it won't be
for quite a while." Now keep in mind that this was the sort of
information people involved in the production gave the press while
director Christopher Nolan was making "The Prestige." Will a third
Nolan Batman movie happen? Of course. Will anyone be willing to talk
about before Nolan's next film, "Inception" comes out? No.

Dare
follows three very different teenagers through the last semester of
high school. There are Alexa (Emmy Rossum), the overachieving good girl
who longs to break out of
her shell; Ben (Ashley Springer), the melancholy outsider confused
about his sexuality; and Johnny (Zach Gilford), the rich kid who has
everything, including good looks, but hides behind his bad boy persona.
This unlikely trio fall into each other's lives and each
other’s arms, making a last ditch effort to shake things up before they
actually have to start living as adults. Director Adam Salky and writer
David Brind takes us into some uncharted territory with fresh eyes and
matter-of-fact authority. Sweet and sexy don’t always go together, but
they work beautifully in this instance because the sexuality of the
film is cleverly woven into the fabric of the story. You can ask why
the kids are in such a hurry to experience adult feelings, especially
when their parents, comically enough, are afraid to get in the way. All
is answered in the nuanced performances of this exceptional cast. They
capture perfectly a generation with nothing to rebel against except
their self imposed inhibitions. By being keenly perceptive, director
Salky stacks up countless priceless moments in crafting teen romance
with a decidedly modern spin. In DARE, the kids do what they need to do
to become the adults they should.

Emily Kunstler and Sarah Kunstler explore the life of their father, the
late radical civil rights lawyer. In the 1960s and 70s, William
Kunstler fought for civil rights with Martin Luther King Jr. and
represented the famed “Chicago 8” activists who protested the Vietnam
War. When the inmates took over Attica prison, or when the American
Indian Movement stood up to the federal government at Wounded Knee,
they asked Kunstler to be their lawyer. |
